    hahaha man thats terrible.
In south Africa we have places with names that are also “warped”

unfortunately the majority of them are in afrikaans and the joke would be lost in translation.

    eg

daggafontein is a place about 200 kilometers from Johannesburg. fontein is a common place name like “town” or “city” and dagga is the afrikaans word for weed (not the common garden variety I mean the giggle twig variety)

    anyway

    nice blog

In the area where I live, there are two small towns called “Pilas” (meaning both “sinks” as in “kitchen sinks”, *not* as in “sinks and drowns”) and “Camas”: “beds”. But the local people are so used to it they don’t notice it’s kind of funny.

The whale is actually in South Dildo, not Dildo, and it’s of a Humpback whale head which was given the whaling museum. The Statue was once in the city of St. John’s and was moved to South Dildo once the museum opened.
South Dildo and Dildo are not the same community, in fact they have a community in between them.

While Dildo is not florishing with bowling allies, theaters or even a Tim Hortons, neither is any small outport community in Newfoundland. I still woulnd’t call it Dull. Dildo is rich in history, there is a boat tour which will take you out for aprox 3 hours, longer if you are really enjoying yourselves and time permits. On the tour you can visit Dildo Island the old site of a Dorset Eskimo. They found an intact fire pit there in the summer of 2004, oldest found yet in the prov. It is also the site of a Cod Hatchery, the only sucessful one I believe in Canada.

Dildo was also voted one of the 10 prettiest small communities in Canada.

If you don’t get to meet Captain Dildo in person, there is a statue of him across from the interpretation center or Museum. (Not the one in South Dildo, Dildo has it’s own).

As for the name Dildo, Nobody really knows the origin. Some believe it was named by the Portugesse, some by the Spainards. Many belive it’s named after the island. The word Dildo was is also found in Shakespearian poems.
