82 Countries, 43 Things · 29 November 04

Apparently, the world is full of twinklers. Here’s a list of goals from around the world. Have an idea what these say? Add your translation to the comments.

Update: Steve Rubel predicted we’d see some press on our 43 Things preview, Twinkler but, as if on cue for the point we were trying to make about international users, here comes this international story from a news site in Norway. Today we’ve seen as much traffic from Norway as from the USA!

  1. Using Google I’ve translated #5 as, “reconstructs my individual website”. A better translation might be “redesign my personal website”.

笑顔を増やす - 16 people want to this.

  2. These are just guesses, since I’m barely fluent in one language.

#1: run the Castelnaudary semi-marathon in 1 hour, 20 minutes
    #6: build a house
#12: spend more time with my wife/girlfriend (literally, “woman”)
#24: kiss (something; “verteilen” is the infinitive form of a verb, but I don’t know what it means)
#27: girlfriend (literally, the feminine form of “friend”)

  3. #29 means “to play in Maracana”. Maracanã is the biggest soccer stadium in the world, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  4. #16 should be something like:

“Put online the site, what you said Heric?”

    Mysterious!

  5. полохматить бабушку: бабушкa means grandmother and the form бабушку indicates something happens to grandmother. Meanwhile, полохматить appears to be a slang infinitive verb. Given the often ribald nature of Russian slang (mat) I think it’s likely something nasty is going to happen to poor dear grandmother. If I had to guess I’d say it means “to rub out granny” or “to clean out granny’s nest egg.” Or perhaps a semi-literal translation of the phrase completely misses the point? I really shouldn’t have given away my Russian text books.

  6. 17) ‘Become a light’
    20) ‘Rule the world’
    24) ‘Distribute kisses’
    27) ‘Friends’ (sorry Craig, it’s plural for friend, not femenine)
    32) ‘Grow old happlily’

  7. What would be really cool is if I could meet people who are interested in twinkler in a particular country; and find out if they are interested in twinkler because:
a.) They like one or all of the employee blogs of the Robotcoop.
    b.) Like Ruby & RubyonRails.
c.) Like to start a company similar to the Robotcoop.
    d.) Like Mac’s
    e.) Something else.

Basically starting a community. Could you guys integrate meetup.com into your site or something like that?

  8. I took all the French ones. Some had already been translated above, but I included them anyhow for completeness.

    1. Do the Castelnaudary half-marathon in less than 1 hr 20 min. (Note that “in” was in English.)
    6. Build a house.
    10. Not be forgotten when I’m gone.
    12. Spend more time with my wife. (Just wife, not girlfriend. :-) )
    13. Have my own bakery and not care if it doesn’t make any money.
    22. Eat good stuff.
    23. Open my eyes underwater.
    28. Eat b’fast [sic] with Clara Morgane.
    34. Graduate from high school.
    36. Succeed in life.
    38. Be happy.
    43. Smoke a family-sized joint.
